Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many tissues and organs but principally attacks the synovial joints. About 1% of the world’s population is afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis, women 3x more often than men. Onset is most frequent between the ages of 30-40’s but people of any age can be affected.
When RA is clinically suspected, tests for the presence of rheumatoid factor (RF) are conducted. A negative RF does not rule out a positive diagnosis; rather the arthritis is characterized as seronegative. This is the case in about 15% of patients.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a highly-studied indication within the therapeutic area of Inflammatory Diseases. RA specimens can be used in preclinical research, drug discovery, drug toxicity, biomarker development, and pre-selection of indication for clinical trials.
