Background | Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) is one of the rarer types of NHL. MCL is a disease of naïve pre-germinal center B cells, located in the “mantle zone” surrounding the normal germinal center follicles. A distinctive translocation at t(11;14)(q13;q32) causes upregulation of Bcl-1, development arrest, and unlimited proliferation of the mantle-zone B cells. This chromosomal translocation causes the over-expression of Bcl-1’s protein product, Cyclin-D1. In addition, these mantle-zone B cells express the CD5 marker. MCL is one of the few NHLs that can cross the blood-brain barrier. |
